What is the Six-Month Bridge Course in Primary Teacher Education?

The Six-Month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education is a professional development programme created specifically for:

  •  In-service primary teachers
  • Holding a B.Ed degree
  • Appointed between 28 June 2018 and 11 August 2023

This course upgrades teaching skills, aligns teachers with primary-level pedagogy, and bridges the gap between B.Ed training and the actual requirements of teaching young learners.

It is developed by NCTE under the guidance of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and implemented by NIOS in ODL mode.

Why is the Bridge Course Mandatory?

The Supreme Court Judgment, dated 08.04.2024, in
M.A. Diary No: 4303/2024 in Civil Appeal No. 5068/2023 (Devesh Sharma vs Union of India), directed:

  • Primary teachers appointed with B.Ed must undergo this special bridge course.

  • Non-completion will result in invalidation of appointment.

  • The course is NOT valid for future recruitment, only for retaining current employment.

Who is Eligible for the Bridge Course?

To register, teachers must fulfill all the following:

  • Must be an in-service primary teacher

Teaching in a government / government-aided / recognized primary school.

  • Must hold a valid B.Ed degree
  • Must be appointed between:

📅 28 June 2018 – 11 August 2023

✔ Must submit a self-certificate signed by the school principal

✔ Must complete the course within 1 year of commencement

If you fail to complete the course within the timeframe, your appointment becomes invalid.

School Experience (100 marks | 4 credits)

Teachers must complete:

1. Teaching Lessons – 40 Marks

10 lessons each in:

  • The World Around Us

Total = 40 marks

2. Portfolio – 10 Marks

3. Activities & Workshops – 25 Marks

Mandatory Activities:

  • Children’s Play

  • Art

  • Craft

  • Music

  • Yoga / Physical Education / Well-being

Each activity = 5 marks

4. Reflective Journal – 25 Marks

(One entry per day)

Working Days Requirement

  • 20 teaching days for school experience

  • 10 contact class days (offline/online as per NIOS)

  • Minimum 90% attendance is compulsory
