The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has officially launched the 6-Month Certificate Course (Bridge) in Primary Teacher Education for in-service teachers appointed with B.Ed. degrees. This initiative comes as a response to directions from the Supreme Court of India and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education and NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education).

This blog explains everything you need to know — what the course is, who needs to do it, why it’s necessary, when it starts and ends, how to register, documents required, and official rulings behind it.

What Is the NIOS Bridge Course?

The 6-month Bridge Course is a mandatory certification designed for in-service primary school teachers (Classes 1–5) who:

  • Hold a B.Ed. qualification

  • Were appointed based on NCTE’s 2018 notification

  • Were in-service before August 11, 2023

It aims to bridge the pedagogical gap between general B.Ed. training and primary education needs.

Why Is This Course Mandatory?

This course stems from legal directives:

  • NCTE’s 2018 amendment allowed B.Ed. holders to teach classes 1–5 only if they completed a bridge course within 2 years of appointment.

  • The Rajasthan High Court nullified that clause in 2021.

  • The Supreme Court upheld this in August 2023, making B.Ed. holders ineligible for future primary teacher appointments — unless they complete the bridge course.

  • In April 2024, the Supreme Court ordered that:

    • Teachers appointed prior to August 11, 2023 would not be removed.

    • But they must complete the Bridge Course within one year or risk invalidation of their appointment.

Who Should Do This Course?

Only the following in-service primary teachers are eligible:

  • Appointed with B.Ed. degree

  • Appointed before August 11, 2023

  • Appointed in compliance with NCTE’s 2018 guidelines

  • Currently in regular service
