NIOS Scheme of Studies: Subject Groups for Secondary & Senior Secondary Courses

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) offers a flexible and student-friendly subject selection system for learners at both the Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) levels. With a wide range of subjects and combination options, students can tailor their learning according to their interests, career goals, or previous academic background.

NIOS Secondary Course (Class 10) – Subject Scheme

To obtain a Pass Certificate at the Secondary level, a learner must:

• Pass in minimum five subjects

  • One or two languages from Group A

  • Three or four subjects from Group B

• Can opt for up to two additional subjects, making it maximum seven subjects

Group A – Language Subjects (Choose 1 or 2)

Note: Indian Sign Language can be opted by deaf/hard of hearing learners in place of any other language.

Group B – Other Subjects (Choose 3 or 4)

Subjects include:

• Mathematics, Science & Technology, Social Science

• Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science*

• Psychology, Indian Culture & Heritage

• Painting*, Data Entry Operations*, Hindustani Sangeet*, Carnatic Sangeet*, Folk Art*

• Subjects under Indian Knowledge Tradition like:

  • Veda Adhyyan#, Sanskrit Vyakarana#, Bharatiya Darshan#, Sanskrit Sahitya#, Natyakala#*

*Subjects with practical components

Mention of "Indian Knowledge Tradition" on certificate if 4 such subjects + Sanskrit Language are passed

NIOS Senior Secondary Course (Class 12) – Subject Scheme

To obtain a Senior Secondary Pass Certificate, a learner must:

• Pass in five subjects

  • One or two languages from Group A

  • Remaining from Group B to F, but only one subject from each of Groups C, D, E, and F

• Can opt for two additional subjects (again, one per group C–F)

Group A – Language Subjects

Groups B to F – Other Subjects

Group B: Business, Psychology, Home Science*, Gender Studies, Painting*, etc.
Group C: Physics*, History, Environmental Science*, Library Science*
Group D: Chemistry*, Political Science, Mass Communication*, Military Studies
Group E: Biology*, Accountancy, Introduction to Law, Military History
Group F: Computer Science*, Sociology, Tourism, Physical Education*

Subjects under Indian Knowledge Tradition (like Veda Adhyyan#, Natyakala#*) offer a certificate mention upon successful completion with Sanskrit.

• Subjects with an asterisk include practical components.

• A student may choose one subject only from each of Group C, D, E, and F.

• Maximum of seven subjects allowed (five main + two additional with extra fee).

• Timetable may have certain subjects scheduled at the same time, so choose accordingly.
