NIOS Scheme of Studies: Subject Groups for Secondary & Senior Secondary Courses

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) offers a flexible and student-friendly subject selection system for learners at both the Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) levels. With a wide range of subjects and combination options, students can tailor their learning according to their interests, career goals, or previous academic background.

NIOS Secondary Course (Class 10) – Subject Scheme

To obtain a Pass Certificate at the Secondary level, a learner must:

  • Pass in minimum five subjects

    • One or two languages from Group A

    • Three or four subjects from Group B

  • Can opt for up to two additional subjects, making it maximum seven subjects

    • Veda Adhyyan#, Sanskrit Vyakarana#, Bharatiya Darshan#, Sanskrit Sahitya#, Natyakala#*

*Subjects with practical components

Mention of "Indian Knowledge Tradition" on certificate if 4 such subjects + Sanskrit Language are passed

NIOS Senior Secondary Course (Class 12) – Subject Scheme

To obtain a Senior Secondary Pass Certificate, a learner must:

  • Pass in five subjects

    • One or two languages from Group A

    • Remaining from Group B to F, but only one subject from each of Groups C, D, E, and F

  • Can opt for two additional subjects (again, one per group C–F)
