SECTION – A: READING
Mowgli grew up with the wolf cubs, though they, of course, were grown wolves almost before he was a boy. Father Wolf taught him the meaning of things in the jungle, until he understood every rustle in the grass, every note of the owls above his head and every splash of every little fish.
When he was not learning, he sat out in the sun and slept, and ate and went to sleep again. When he felt dirty or hot, he swam in the forest pools-when he wanted honey, he climbed trees the way Bagheera the panther showed him to do. He took his place at the Council Rock too, when the Wolf Pack met. There, he discovered that if he stared hard at any wolf, the wolf would be forced to drop his eyes and so he used to stare for fun. At other times, he would pick the long thorns out of the pads of his friends, for wolves suffer terribly from thorns and burrs in their coats.
He would go down the hillside into the cultivated lands by night and look very curiously at the villagers in their huts. He loved better than anything else to go with Bagheera into the dark warm heart of the forest at night and to sleep through the drowsy day.

Read the following passage carefully:
One day, a Brahmin by the name of Sevaram asked Birbal for help. He said that his forefathers had been great Sanskrit scholars and that people used to respectfully refer to them as Panditji. He said that he had no money nor need for wealth; he was content living a simple life, but he had just one wish. He wished people would refer to him as Panditji. He asked Birbal how he could achieve this.
Birbal said that the task was fairly simple. If the Brahmin were to follow his advice word for word, this task could be achieved. Then Birbal advised the Brahmin to shout at anyone who would call him Panditji from then on.
Now, the children who lived on the same street as the Brahmin did not like him since he scolded them often. They were just waiting for an opportunity to get back at him. Birbal told the children that the Brahmin would get really irritated if they were to start calling him Panditji. The children started calling him Panditji and the Brahmin, as advised by Birbal, started shouting at them. The children spread the word to all the other children in the neighbourhood that Sevaram hated being called Panditji, so they in turn all started calling him Panditji.
After a while, Sevaram got tired of scolding them, but by then, everyone was already used to calling him Panditji. Hence, the game was over, but the name stuck.

Saving the Girl Child
It is very sad to hear stories like the one where a baby girl was found abandoned near a garbage heap in our locality. Even though the world is progressing, some people still think of the girl child as a burden. This makes us wonder why such thinking still exists and what we can do to change it.
Every child, whether a boy or a girl, is valuable and important. Girls play a crucial role in society, from supporting families to contributing to the country’s growth. However, many girls are not treated with the respect they deserve. Female foeticide—where unborn girls are aborted just because they are girls—still happens in many parts of our country. This has led to an imbalance in the number of boys and girls.
A balanced ratio of boys and girls is necessary for the healthy growth of society. If the number of girls continues to drop, it will lead to serious problems in the future. A society without enough girls will face issues like increased violence, human trafficking, and family problems.
It is very important to make people aware of the value of the girl child. Schools, families, and the media must help change the thinking of society. People need to understand that girls are not a burden but a gift. They can contribute as much as boys, if not more, to society.
We need to save the girl child, not just by protecting their lives but also by giving them equal opportunities in education, work, and life. It’s time to create a world where every girl is respected, loved, and given the chance to reach her full potential. Together, we can make this change and create a better future for everyone.

“Increasing Obesity in Children”
On 10th September 2024, Intelligence Academy held a seminar on “Increasing Obesity in Children” to make students and parents aware of the rising problem of obesity among school kids.
The main cause discussed was the sedentary lifestyle that children have today. Many students spend a lot of time sitting indoors, using mobile phones, playing video games, or watching TV. This lack of movement is one of the reasons why children are gaining weight.
Another important point was watching too much TV. When children sit for hours in front of the TV, they not only avoid physical activity but also eat unhealthy snacks, which adds to weight gain.
It was highlighted that there is very little physical exercise among children nowadays. Instead of playing outside or joining sports, many children choose to stay indoors. This leads to unhealthy weight gain and poor fitness levels.
Social networking was also discussed as a reason for children staying indoors. Instead of playing outside with friends, children often spend time on their phones or computers, which keeps them inactive.
Finally, the talk focused on the increased consumption of junk food like chips, burgers, and sugary drinks. Eating too much junk food is a major reason for obesity as it has lots of calories and very little nutrition.
The seminar ended with advice on how to stay healthy. Children were encouraged to be more active, play outdoors, reduce screen time, and eat healthier meals. Parents were also asked to help by offering healthier food choices and encouraging physical activities.
In conclusion, the seminar showed the main reasons for obesity in children and gave simple tips to overcome it. By following these suggestions, children can stay fit and healthy.

(i) What can’t the children rebuilt?
Ans. According to the poem, children cannot rebuild the world that adults have destroyed. The line “All the children of the world, oh adults of the world, Could not rebuild what you destroy” emphasizes that the damage caused by adults, particularly through war and destruction, is beyond the children’s capacity to repair.
(ii) What should humans do to make the world a better place to live in?
Ans. According to the poem “A Prayer for Healing,” humans should join with the earth and each other to:
- Restore nature: Bring new life to the land, refresh the air, restore waters, and renew forests.
- Protect creatures and plants: Care for plants and protect creatures.
- Celebrate natural beauty: Rejoice in sunlight, the seas, and the stars.

These actions would contribute to making the world a better place to live.
(iii) Why are words referred to ghosts in the poem?
Ans. In the poem, words are referred to as ghosts because, unlike physical injuries that heal over time, the hurtful impact of words lingers in the mind and heart. They “haunt” a person, leaving lasting emotional scars. Words may not cause visible damage like sticks or stones, but their psychological effect can remain long after the wounds from physical pain have healed.

They were from the north and were dressed in rags with their heads shaven and bodies painted with ashes. The attendant mentioned that they might have come to beg from Jijabai but assured her that they were holy men and had traveled a long way, which made it difficult to refuse them. The message conveyed was that the sadhus wished to see Jijabai, and they might have news or blessings to offer.

(iii) Why did Kondiba take to begging even though he hated it?

The magic cure that the old grey-haired man performed on Raja involved reciting some mantras while sitting in front of Raja and his grandfather. He also used water in a small brass vessel as part of the ritual. After a few minutes, the old man washed Raja’s finger and gave him some water to drink, declaring that Raja was out of danger.
